Arthur's Smoothies and Superjuices

Overview

As multi-generational fruit farmers from Ontario, we believe in “Just Fruit – Nothing Else,” delivering all the nutrients from the fruit in a convenient portable bottle to help consumers meet the recommended 5-10 Fruit servings a day with our Smoothies. That philosophy also extends into our environmental footprint, where our brand image and fruit farm roots combine to look for innovative solutions. An initial estimate of our carbon footprint guided our environmental roadmap. The budget for the project was $350k and we projected a 3-year payback on 6 projects. Calculation of our carbon footprint was key to understand where to focus – in our case it was transport, sourcing and production. Environmental projects can be managed like any other part of your baseline business with repeatable results BUT it is extremely important to have a solid plan laid out and the organizational commitment to make it happen. On transportation, we reduced our packaging material weights by 10%, improving freight options on inbound raw material by changing package shippers from bag in box to palletized layers for bottles, railcar for frozen ingredients across country, reduce shippers to store in size. This area was not only environmentally solid it proved very attractive to running the business cost effectively. We also were surprised on how when you engaged the supply chain on environmental issues that innovative solutions came to the forefront to meet the objective. On the sourcing front, we launched our US brand with Rainforest Alliance Certified banana puree, ensuring it has been produced using farm and forestry methods that are beneficial for people and the planet. We are currently reviewing additional options with similar benefits like supporting our purchase of over 5 million kgs of Canadian fruits and vegetables via our BUY LOCAL initiative. On the production side, 100% of Arthur’s electricity was migrated to be generated by renewable, natural resources. We have also engaged consultants for 2009 to review energy saving options in the plant also to continue the strides in this area.Arthur's Fresh Company is environmentally accountable to the core - we feel it just makes good business sense. As parents ourselves, we believe we all need to be accountable for our actions to our children, as well as future generations. The environmental roadmap was our first endeavor to turn this belief into action. The initiatives also complemented our existing company policy of donating 10% of our profits in support of various global charities. Our first year spent focusing on how to be a leader environmentally has been rewarding – already we have seen projects come to fruition that will benefit the planet longer term. Step 1 complete…on to step 2!

Motivation for Change

Arthur's Fresh Company is environmentally accountable to the core - we feel it just makes good business sense. As parents ourselves, we believe we all need to be accountable for our actions to our children, as well as future generations.

The environmental road map was our first endeavor to turn this belief into action. The initiatives also complemented our existing company policy of donating 10% of our profits in support of various global charities.

Cost Effectiveness

Transport is the biggest contributor to our carbon footprint. We focused on reducing overall package weight; increasing cube for shipping, as well as migrating wherever possible to rail-car shipping for landed transport.

Performance

For our primary Smoothies product, customer experience is enhanced by how easy it is to open package. As part of package reduction exercise, we migrated to a newer, 40% lighter cap that was much, much easier for consumer to open. We also removed the plastic over-sleeve on single serve 325mL Smoothies.

Sourcing

Utilizing certified purees, wherever possible, produced using sustainable farm and forestry methods that are good for the people and the planet.

Clean Production

In 2008 we began sourcing electricity generated by renewable, natural resources. Wind and low-impact waterpower are emissions and carbon-free, which positively affects global climate change. We also became HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) certified to better manage the plant.

In order to effectively and productively eliminate waste, 100,000 lbs of our product was donated to colleges, universities, food banks and other at-risk centers to support people-in-need; in doing so, this relieved our warehouse of logistical inefficiencies and ensured we were not wasting any resources.

Effective Recovery

Arthur's packaging is 100% recyclable. Recycling the PET container, sleeve and bottle prevents emissions of greenhouse gases, saves energy and reduces the need for new landfills.

New bottle delivery moved to reusable palletized skids from bag-in-box, eliminating unnecessary corrugate recycling.

Community Benefit

Our corporate philosophy is stated on our website:

Arthur’s Fresh believes that small consistent decisions lead to BIG results.

Our five guiding principles form the basis of all we do:

1) make 100% natural products that are 100% good for people

2) procure ingredients ethically and support the agrarian lifestyle

3) minimize waste and maximize total system recyclability

4) lead by example and take the high road

5) seed profits into ideas that enrich children’s lives.

Clearly, we are determined to lead by example, and help one act of green at a time.

Material Health

Arthur's reduced its packaging material weights by 10% and all packaging is 100% recyclable. Recycling the PET container, sleeve and bottle prevents emissions of greenhouse gases, saves energy and reduces the need for new landfills.

Not only is the packaging healthy, but the contents are extremely healthy for its consumers; the ingredients are not over-processed, they are not from concentrates, and there are no additives, so they are truly all natural. Because of this production method, the nutrients that the original fruit ingredient bore are maintained in the Smoothies and juices.

Resource & Energy Optimization

In 2008 we began using electricity generated by renewable, natural resources. We also reduced PET package weights by 10% and increased cube utilization on bottle shipments to gain 25% more per shipment
