Water Bag-in-Box provides social, environmental and economic benefits with a new packaging approach that improves access to clean drinking water. The innovative design provides an alternative to rigid bottle systems that typically cost 40 percent more per liter, are more costly and more energy intensive to produce, and are more subject to contamination. In addition to the responsibly sourced materials, the outer corrugated cardboard packaging is 100 percent recyclable and the lightweight inner liner is suitable for energy recovery.
In 2007, Brazil marketed 7 billion liters of bottled mineral water. Of this market, 60% was bottled in 10 or 20 liter rigid bottles. The 20 liter bottles comprised 90% of this volume.
The filling technology provides increased productivity to the production line.
The carton is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
The bag and the box can be collapsed individually and recycled in the corrugate recycling chain.
Recycling is extensively communicated on the package. The companies involved are training the Point of Sales to advertise not only the convenience of the packaging but also the ecological side.
