Overview

To achieve a high end finish in folding cartons, traditional technology utilizes a metalized holographic film which is laminated to a paperboard substrate. This process requires a complex supply chain involving manufacturing and metallization of the holographic film, shipping to a facility for lamination to paperboard, then shipping to the folding carton facility for printing and converting. This folding carton utilizes inks and a new coating technology to achieve a comparable holographic look without the use of a film lamination. The supply chain eliminates the manufacturing and shipping of the metalized film, the process of laminating to paperboard, and shipping to the converter. The holographic affect is applied to the surface of the printed paperboard with an in-line process. This folding carton is produced using a simplified supply chain with fewer manufacturing and shipping steps. Additionally, the carton eliminates the metal content and film lamination used in traditional holographic packaging. As a result, the carton can be recycled in traditional paperboard recycling streams without the concerns of contamination due to a polyester layer and metal content. There are additional benefits with this package beyond sustainability that include a 5% weight reduction, a reduced lead time in the supply chain, and a cost savings. The finished carton meets specifications for high speed packaging, scuff resistance, and industry standard tests. The application of the step change technology for this package could start a trend to obsolete (or significantly reduce) laminated paperboard cartons and the associated recycling challenges.
